About this notice

We are committed to protecting your privacy and earning your trust. This notice describes the personal information we collect about you and how we use and protect it. It applies to our current and former customers who live in Australia, and replaces earlier versions that we may have given to you. This notice is from Progressive Direct Insurance Company ABN 28 140 389 528 AFSL 342 902. As a private sector organisation, we are covered by the Privacy Act 1988 and we are committed to complying with the act’s National Privacy Principles. Under the National Privacy Principles, we are required to have clearly expressed policies on our management of personal information. For questions or concerns about our Privacy Policy, please contact us using the tab at the bottom of this page.

By purchasing a policy from us, you consent to the collection, use, disclosure, storage, and processing of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. In addition to you, this Privacy Policy applies to covered drivers about whom you give us personal information, other persons who have cover under this policy, and persons who claim against a driver with cover under this policy. We may collect, use, disclose, store, and process the personal information of those persons like we do your personal information.

By providing personal information to us about covered drivers, you are representing that you are authorised by them to do so. You also represent that you have informed the covered drivers, and any other person whom you authorise to use your vehicle, of the terms of our Privacy Policy and they have consented to them.

Information Collection

We collect personal information about you and other drivers for the purposes of quoting and servicing your insurance policy. This includes underwriting and rating the insurance, investigating and settling any insurance claims, communicating with you, and conducting research and actuarial analyses to improve our products and pricing. In most cases, we collect personal information directly from you. This information may include your name, street and email addresses, phone number, date of birth, gender, marital status, education level, length of home ownership, licence status and history, driving history, information about other drivers, vehicle details, garaging address, and prior insurance details. For rating and claim purposes, we will also obtain from third party service providers information concerning any past bankruptcies, driving history and claim information.

If you have an accident that may be covered by your insurance policy, we will obtain additional information about you and the accident in order to investigate and settle your insurance claim. We will obtain this information from you, police reports, and third parties, such as witnesses and people involved in the accident.

Our Web site will also obtain information that is unique to Internet transactions. It includes the Web site that linked you to ours, your computer operating system, and the pages you viewed on our site. Our Web site will also store "cookies" on your computer. Disclosures include those that we feel are required to provide insurance claims or customer service, prevent fraud, perform research or comply with the law. Recipients may include, for example, claims representatives, other insurance companies, our related entities, service providers (including insurance claim information data collectors), law enforcement, courts, and government agencies.

Your information will be transferred to our data processing systems in the United States. These systems are shared with and operated by our related entities in the United States who will have access to your information in order to quote and service your insurance policy, as described above.

Data Security

We restrict access to your personal information to our employees and others who we feel must use it to provide our products and services. Their use of the information is limited by law, our employee code of conduct, and written agreements where appropriate. We also maintain physical, electronic and procedural safeguards to protect your information.

You may receive a copy of the information for a fee to cover our costs. We may not provide access to certain information, such as privileged information about insurance claims or lawsuits, but we will provide a reason for denying any such access.

To correct information about you, send a written request as described above, explaining your desired correction. Within 10 business days, we will either make the requested correction or tell you why we will not.

Web Site Practices

When you visit our Australian Web sites, we use the information we collect to provide services to you and to help understand what you want so that we can enhance your online experience. For example, if you start an insurance quote on our Web site, but decide to finish it later, we will save your information so you can pick up where you left off. We also use this information to analyse use of our Web sites.

We advertise on other companies’ Web sites. Some of these sites may use cookies and “Web beacons” when you click on or move your cursor over our ads. This technology will transmit non-personally identifiable information about you to us or our service providers. We use the information to analyse our marketing efforts.

We may use advertising companies to display our ads on Web sites. These companies may use non-personally identifiable information about your visits to Web sites, together with non-personally identifiable information about your purchases and interests from other online and offline sources, to provide ads about goods and services of interest to you. In addition, we may share Web site usage information with these companies to manage and target ads and for market research. We and our ad companies may note some of the pages you visit on our site through Web beacons. While serving ads to this site, our ad companies may place or recognize unique cookies on your computer.

You can choose to have your computer warn you each time a cookie is being sent, or you can choose to reject all cookies. In most cases, you can do this by changing the settings on your browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc.). Each browser is a little different, so look at your browser’s “Help” menu to learn how to modify its settings to reflect your cookie preferences. However, if you choose to reject cookies, you may not have access to many features that make your Web experience smoother, and some of our services may not function properly. When you quote or buy insurance on our Web site, we collect your email address so that we can send you emails concerning your transactions with us, and other information we think you’ll find useful.

We will also use your email address to provide updates about our products and services. You can stop receiving promotional updates by using the links provided in the emails. Customers may also manage their preferences in the policy services area of our Web site.

Web site security

Our security measures help ensure that your data is secured and encrypted, so that others cannot access it while in transit. We limit access to our servers and require our employees to adhere to high standards of ethics and integrity in performing their jobs.

We use a secure server and security protocol to safeguard information you provide during the purchase process. Our secure server uses a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to interact with you when you provide personal information during the purchase process. We handle your information via 128-bit encryption. Every secure page on our Web sites has a digital certificate by RSA Data Security/Secure Server CA. This is shown via the site certificate that resides on all secure pages. To view this certificate, click on the image of the "closed lock" or the "solid key" on the bottom of your browser window. A small frame displaying security information will appear. Click on "subject" to verify that you are on our site. Click on "Issuer" to verify the site certification authority.
